Step off the pavement and go back in time – the Dutch Manor Antique Hotel is situated in the vibrant multicultural Bo-Kaap that is rich in history from days gone by.
The building date’s back to 1812 and it is the only registered antique hotel in South Africa. Typical of the Old Dutch period, the interior and furnishings of the Dutch Manor Hotel showcases some of the finest Cape Dutch antiques. Among the antiques – yellowwood half-moon tables, a Cape-mahogany reception desk, original 18th century four-poster stinkwood beds, authentic bedside lamps, gilded mirrors, little chairs that were made for children and magnificent armories (cupboards) with ornate carvings in solid wood that demonstrated the craftsmanship of the carpenter. The ambiance in this typical 18th century home was the real deal from once upon a time. I felt an impression of what it was like during the forefathers of the Cape.
My personal experience was fabulous. I arrived at the Dutch Manor on a hot summers evening and I was greeted with a glass of wine to sip on the stoop. I sat down and listened to the sounds of the Bo-Kaap, I really got the sense and feeling of the atmosphere surrounding The Manor. I could hear children playing on cobble stoned streets, stones embedded here since Jan van Riebeeck’s time, dogs barking in the distance the sound of the Adhan calling Muslims to pray, mothers calling children inside from colorful houses as it was near their supper time. All this marked the unusual lifestyle in one of the oldest parts of the Mother City.
Should you decide to step back in time for your own unique experience, I trust you will not be disappointed. It is peaceful and homely and each of the luxury rooms is equipped with state-of-the-art modern amenities, providing en-suite, contemporary bathrooms, air conditioning, free Wi-Fi and 26 inch flat screen TV’s. Gosh! What would Jan van Riebeeck say to all that!
Go Dutch with a blast from the past and future!
I have a theory – why settle for something less when you can have more?
