After many years of jet setting around the world, Quentin has come home to roost at the Oakhurst farmhouse in Hout Bay. From the French Riviera to the Caribbean, Quentin’s culinary skills have delighted the taste buds of many aristocratic families, celebrities, eurotrash and in particular the London based tycoon, Jonathan Green and family. Quentin started brewing up a storm and in a short time, the world became his oyster.
The first big player to change Quentin’s life was Sol Kerzner. In fact, he was largely responsible for putting Quentin on the foodie map. Recognising Quentin’s talent, Sol took the bull by the horns and placed Quentin in the arena on his estate in Cape Town. Year in and year out at Sol’s legendary New Year’s Eve party in Hout Bay Quentin was able to display his own mastery and expertise as Sol’s personal chef.
Today Quentin has taken up residency as an Ambassador to fine dining in Hout Bay. In the refurbished barn you will feel the gentle, sophisticated, soft approach to fine dining and you will be able to enjoy the wide, wild range of dishes based on the creations of Quentin’s country lifestyle.
The proof is not only in the pudding. For starters, the smoked ostrich carpaccio with a pomegranate and peach salad was delicious. I was then curious about the roast whole duck with Jerusalem artichokes, wild mushrooms and sticky red cabbage with juniper which I found to be succulent and crisp. This was a nice surprise as duck can be tricky. My dinner date had the Squid and tuna fish salad with star aniseed and plum sauce. This was followed by the overnight lamb neck with red wine, garlic, thyme and leeks, served with boiled potatoes. We shared the rose, pistachio, date and apricot frozen nougat and topped it all off with a sherry as a night cap.
Quentin has gone full circle and returned to an area familiar to him. I am delighted that he has chosen to grace the shores of Africa once again; after all it’s in your bones!
