First Thursdays Walk About

First Thursday is the way to go at the beginning of each month in the hippest part of Cape Town. The walkabout experience in the cultural wealth of the Mother City has been buzz-worthy for some time now. First Thursdays is a global concept brought to Cape Town by local collaborator and dot connector Gareth Pearson – who is behind other initiatives, including Cape Town Bicycle Commuter.

Low-key first Thursdays has become a lifestyle for Capetonians and visiting guests. The concept – already very popular in Zurich, London and Seattle – has gained fantastic momentum in Cape Town.

Trendsetting Bree Street is the hub for this monthly activity that spills over into Hout, Loop, Buitengracht, Wale and Shortmarket street. Here, galleries, antique shops, photographic studios, restaurants, bars and hidden little places have all become part of the map for the first Thursday night of each month.

You can explore the city and wander through beautiful heritage buildings where some entrepreneurs and unique businesses have set up their brands. Luvey ‘n Rose have taken up residency in one such building on Loop Street where you can feel the charm of once upon a time in the Colonial Cape. Step over the threshold, into a house steeped in history.

La Parada, a Tapas restaurant and bar, is packed to the rafters 24/7 and above them Sam (South African Market) is open till late. Every other day the market is on the go with popup newbies setting up shop. The creative and innovative small time businesses from all walks of life are playing a big part in the lifeline of city life.

Go walk about, love and live life
