Mooiplaas Wine Estate

Off the beaten track, but right on track, in the Bottelary Hills of Stellenbosh, lies the charming, down to earth and out of this world Mooiplaas Wine Estate & Private Nature Reserve. The estate dates back to 1806, when the original owner, Petrus Jacobus Bosman, acquired the farm and started boering tobacco.

The beautiful Cape Dutch Manor House on the Estate was constructed over the years and completed in 1833. Steeped in tradition and possessing an impressive heritage, the Manor House has long since been designated a National Monument.

In 1963, the farm was bought by Nicolaas and Mercia Roos and became a family farm with the production of wine involving the entire family. The dedication and love that goes into producing their exclusive range of wine – which is mainly for export – is clear for any wine connoisseur to see that the wines are authentic, elegant, well balanced and full of flavors.

I had a little taste of Mooiplaas at a dinner party and was intrigued and curious to get to know their wines. So we buzzed off to experience a wine tasting and picnic in the peaceful grounds on the farm. Their traditional picnic baskets are simple, excellent quality, freshly baked bread, tapenades, charcuterie, cheese and figs. All these honest, clean flavors marry well with Mooiplaas’ wines. Louis Roos believes wine must add joy to life. It certainly did to ours!
