ZEITZ MOCAA

On a continent as large as the entirety of Europe and North America combined, the privately funded Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA) is expected to create and invigorate a greater interest in African contemporary art. British architect Thomas Heatherwick was inspired to create an art institution to world-class standards and proportions and take up the challenge for him and his team to convert the century-old grain silo in Cape Town to create such a space.

The imposing industrial and functional structure was originally built in the 1920s and has now become the Mother city’s boldest new cultural icon, looming majestically over Cape Town’s waterfront. The concrete silos are topped with jewel-like geometric windows – art in themselves and reminiscent of a space station. Inside, the building is a hive of activity. Exposed elevators whiz silently from floor to floor alongside the steel spiral stairway that leads to the exhibition rooms displaying both temporary and permanent collections of contemporary African art. As the only museum of its kind in Africa, MOCAA is attracting visitors and art lovers from all over, like bees to the hive!
