TRAVEL – MAURITIUS

Step into the ocean and feel the sand pushing its way between your toes. Engulf your body in the crystal clear turquoise water – simply euphoric! It’s a tropical dream come true, and for the next ten days we indulged in the amazing experience on Ile Maurice as the French would say.
Leaving the airport in holiday mode we headed towards our chosen destination, on the east coast of Mauritius, Shangri-La-le Touessrok.
Speaking French and driving on the left – an unusual combination – I was intrigued by what our driver had to say about the ancient history, the diversity in ethnicity, languages and faiths. Such a varied history has left Mauritius with a fascinating and unique culture.
Crisscrossing the island, we drove through a smattering of traditional fishing villages, sitting in total contrast to some of the beautiful villas around. Winding our way along the coastal road, we reached our destination.
The key to our room opened the door to some exquisite touches and surprises. A personal butler to see to our needs, beautiful bathrobes and slippers laid out in the stylish bathroom next to our his and hers basins. Magical views that took our breath away. Sipping bubbles while admiring the symphony of colours in the sunset at the end of the day – the dramatic bright yellows, oranges, pinks and mauve’s splashing across the horizon. The mood was set for a romantic dinner at Safron where we indulged in absolutely delicious authentic Indian cuisine!
Days at the beach are for pampering – a service button was under our pagoda – just one touch of it and voila! Fresh fruit on a platter, ice-lolly, drinks, massage, water spritzer (for the face) any other comforts we could desire were ours. After all, we were there to unwind and recharge our batteries.
Our next stop was Hotel Paradis Beachcomber, on the south-western tip of the island. Set against the backdrop of the iconic Le Morne Mountain, the hotel’s picture perfect beach is protected by a coral reef which makes snorkeling exciting, water-skiing inviting and the swimming exceptional. To top an idyllic day of these activities were rum cocktails, snacks, and another spectacular sunset, followed by dinner at the Blue Marlin with the catch of the day.
By this point we were sun-kissed, fancy free and utterly enchanted by the beauty of Mother Nature on this island paradise. Indulging in the fresh fish and spicy food was all part of the experience. It was then time to head for the northern shore, to the LUX Grand Gaube resort – a gem that truly embodies the spirit of island living. The quiet stillness is what captured my heart, giving me a sense of inner peace and some healthy detachment from the outside world.
It was with heavy hearts that we came to the end of our stay – all good things come to an end. But, if wishes come true then my wish at the wishing tree to return will. Mauritius is a seductive island – no wonder it has captured the hearts of so many before.
